As a family law attorney with nearly 20 years of experience, Attorney Megha R. Thakkar has extensive experience representing clients in divorce proceedings, child custody and parenting time matters, alimony and child support disputes, post-judgment applications, marital settlement agreements, prenuptial agreements, mediation, arbitration, and domestic violence matters. Megha has negotiated fair settlements for her clients through various alternate dispute resolution forums. She has also successfully litigated contested matters from inception to trial. Additionally, she has successfully handled appeals of family law matters in the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey.
Megha also handles complex issues pertaining to equitable distribution. This includes valuation and distribution of marital businesses, distribution of stock options and restricted stock units, and distribution of pension and retirement account allocations, including in connection with New Jersey State Pensions, the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS), the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS), and the Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF). She regularly represents business owners, financial executives, doctors, attorneys, law enforcement officers, teachers, and state employees, among other professionals, as well as their spouses.
Megha is a qualified mediator in family law matters pursuant to R. 1:40 and is frequently appointed by the court to help parties reach amicable resolutions. Megha also serves as an Early Settlement Panelist for the Middlesex County and Somerset County Family Courts. Additionally, Megha also regularly serves as a Parenting Coordinator to assist parties with daily parenting concerns. Prior to entering private practice, Megha served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Andrea G. Carter, J.S.C. in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Family Part, Middlesex County. Prior to launching Thakkar Family Law, Megha was affiliated with a large regional law firm with multiple offices throughout the northeast and beyond, where she also focused exclusively on matrimonial and family law. Megha is admitted to practice in New Jersey and New York. She earned her Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from New York University. Megha is a member of numerous professional organizations and has served in several leadership capacities. She is the Immediate-Past President of the Middlesex County Bar Association. She also serves as Chair of the Middlesex County Bar Association’s Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee. Megha is also a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association Family Law Executive Committee and the Middlesex County Family Law Executive Committee.
Megha is a frequently called-upon guest speaker, presenting informational and educational lectures to peers during various legal industry functions. In January 2025, she spoke about “Courtroom Behavior and Evidence Issues” before the Middlesex County Bar Association Young Lawyers Inn of Court. Megha also provided insights on “Family Law and Immigration” during the New Jersey State Bar Association 2025 Family Law Symposium.
Additionally, Megha is a Master for the Aldona E. Appleton Family Law Inn of Court. She is a member of the South Asian Bar Association of New Jersey and the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey. The Supreme Court of New Jersey previously appointed her as an investigator to the District VIII and District XIII Ethics Committees. Megha was awarded the Middlesex County Bar Association Martin S. Goldin Family Law Award. This is given to a family law practitioner who demonstrates knowledge of applicable law, attempts to reach fair settlements, maintains high standards of integrity and professionalism, and demonstrates leadership within the organization.
